In Zimbabwe, where access to pediatric kidney replacement therapy can be particularly challenging, skills gained through a Saving Young Lives (SYL) course helped make a life-saving intervention possible.

Dr. Linos Sibanda recently shared the story of an 8-day-old baby boy who presented to his team at just seven days of age with severe hypernatremic dehydration complicated by acute kidney injury (AKI). The newborn had lost 10% of his birth weight and arrived with a sodium level of 180 mmol/L and a creatinine level of 700 µmol/L.

Despite initial resuscitation and treatment, his condition remained critical. He developed refractory metabolic acidosis, oliguria and fluid overload, making kidney replacement therapy necessary.

Faced with limited resources, Dr. Sibanda and his team put their training into practice and initiated improvised peritoneal dialysis.

The newborn received peritoneal dialysis for three days, with a successful outcome: his acute kidney injury resolved.

This case is an encouraging example of the impact that practical training and locally adaptable solutions can have in resource-limited settings. By equipping healthcare professionals with the knowledge and confidence to recognize and manage acute kidney injury in children, Saving Young Lives aims to ensure that lifesaving treatment can be delivered even in the most challenging circumstances.
